2000x Dick Bruna
More than Miffy!
Dick Bruna (23 August 1927 – 16 February 2017) was a Dutch author, artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Bruna was best known for his children’s books which he authored and illustrated, numbering over 200. His most notable creation was Miffy (Nijntje in the original Dutch), a small rabbit drawn with heavy graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colors.
Aside from his prolific catalog of children’s books, Bruna also illustrated and designed book covers, posters and promotional materials for his father’s publishing company A.W. Bruna and Zoon. His most popular designs graced the covers of the Zwarte Beertjes (nl) series of books. Well known among his designs are those for The Saint, Havank, James Bond and Simenon’s Maigret books, typified by graphic silhouettes of a pipe on various backgrounds.
The exhibition 2000xDick Bruna offers an impressive overview of 2000 of his book cover designs.
Dick Bruna wrote about the exhibition: ‘I’m really happy with this exhibition, the displays, the use of the real books and all the information about my work’.
The books (not just the covers) are framed in in total 25 displays (150 x 40 x 180 cm) and placed on stands. The displays can also be hung on walls. 2000xDick Bruna includes lighting and optional Dutch or English texts about his early designs, technique and international appreciation.
